Both of my children attended Montessori preschool (private), and my oldest is in a 6-9 class at a public Montessori (magnet) school. Her teacher is AMS certified. Not all the teachers there are certified, but our school district (IPS in Indianapolis) last year did spend $150,000 for additional AMS teacher training for 6-9 teachers. 9-12 is tricky because you still need your 6-9 certification before you can get 9-12 (I believe). Although our school is not perfect, and could improve in many ways, I am quite pleased, and our PTA is very active and does make a difference. There are public Montessori programs in Houston, Milwaukee and Cincinnati. Also, Ft. Wayne, Indiana has an AMS certified public Montessori school. It's all about getting the word out!
Thanks so much for your blog. I really enjoy it.

I think montessori in public schools would be great. I've only recently discovered it, and as I've read about montessori and how long it has been around, I have wondered why they don't use her methods in more schools.

Yes, I agree that bringing Montessori into preschool and kindergarten first is a good idea. There's already some overlap with practical life-type materials, art, etc.

Then, as you say, grades can be added as the children get older. Great idea!

Let's remember that Maria Montessori's work wasn't with the wealthiest children. It can work, one step at a time. Some of the challenges could be ameliorated by easing in to Montessori in the public schools, starting at the very beginning, overhauling head start/kindergarten programs. (They're not in the same high-stakes nonsense that the rest of the kids are in, so it's lower risk.) Add grades as the kids who have been in Montessori already get into those grades. It could be really great, and, if done with "real" Montessori-trained teachers, it might draw some of us back to the public schools.
