This scares the ---- out of me. I thank God my youngest homeschooled child is in college now. I did raise him to be a good American citizen by teaching him to think for himself, how to ask questions, how to recognize fallacies, how to understand the laws of the land, and how to use the system to right a wrong.

I am planning to open a FREE private internet umbrella school open to any family who wants to school their child their way legally. That is what I intend to do about it.

I do wonder how many parents will take the time to become certified, if indeed that remains the law, and there is the larger question of "Should they have to be certified?" in the first place.

It will be interesting to see what develops!

I hope you wil forgive me for using links here, but I have so many thoughts on the subject that it is easier to link to articles I've already written than to take up a lot of space in your comments. I wrote an entry on my blog about how politics works and some arguments for allowing parents to homeschool without government interference:

http://desertspor.blogspot.com/2008/03/politics-freedom-choice.html

The other, more important entry was on my homeshool blog about why the court case doesn't change anything in California. Most people outside of the state don't realze that you can homeschool in California if you have teaching credentials, hire a tutor with credentials OR register your homeschool as a private school and keep a minimal amount of paperwork. This last is the option most homeschoolers in Calfornia take, which means that this ruling does not affect them at all:

http://sporschool.blogspot.com/2008/03/homeschooling-and-media.html

I know, I couldn't believe that the judge would come right out and say that public school's main goal is to create good little obedient citizens, not to help children learn. It was like the calling out the emperor for not wearing clothes!

I do agree that many teachers have very admirable intentions, but the "system" keeps them from truly helping kids learn and grow.

Thanks for stopping by!

Any time a court at that level sets a precedent like this one, it's a bad thing for the home educating parent at large. Not only are the judges admitting that public education is not about imbuing the children with knowledge, but about creating malleable little state subjects, they are stating in their decision that parents are unqualified to teach their children and have no right to even question the curriculum that is being used in the process.

Most teachers are fine human beings, but they are fully indoctrinated into that system: they perceive each child out of school as representative of money being taken away from the school. They believe-- and many seem to agree-- that more funds will equal a better education. Clearly, I am not in agreement with that.

As for my family, we will support the (Federal) Constitutional right of parents to educate their children as they see fit, everywhere in the US.
