A I was typing all of that, I forgot that what I really wanted to say was how much I love the practical life skills. That makes far more sense to me than pretending about those skills. We are going to plant some seeds this afternoon, and I am very excited. At first, I thought two was way too young for something like that. But that was my preconceived ideas getting in the way. Once I saw from a couple of sources how an activity like tha is presented, I realized that it really is possible, and he will gain so much from the activity.

I would think that children get plenty of "dramatic" play at home, so whether they get it at school is irrelevant. I have been "homeschooling" my two-year-old, and I have noticed that he always has some creative new use for the montessori-style activities I make for him. I love watching him come up with new ideas for using things that I hadn't thought of.

The main reason I am leaning more and more toward montessori in our home is because I have found he is very bright but very independant in his learning. He does not like me teaching him things; he likes to figure them out on his own. Giving him activities inspired by the montessori sites I have found online allows him to learn the things he is caable of in a way that he gets to figure it out for himself.

Hi, Susan! That's a great example of taking a child's interests and expanding on them with specific learning activities. Sounds awesome!

Excellent point, Meredith! Children really vary widely in their creative abilities. Some need more of a sturdy foundation than others before beginning to explore the limits of their imagination.

Lori, I believe children are born with their own sense of creativity and some explore it more than others. For our family Montessori has only enhanced my children's natural tendencies towards creativity!! Thank you for this Beautiful post :)

Wow, very interesting! I am so glad your son has had a chance to be in Montessori, and that you have seen so many positive developments.

My kids, too, share the love of changing lyrics to a song. It's a skill, definitely, to be able to sing the same notes but change the words. Very cool that he would do that all on his own!

My son who is three next month has been attending a Montessori school for a standard school year now. His creativity has greatly increased I think since going to the school. Prior to that we had him in drop off day care and hated it because it was supervised chaos. He was not learning anything other than bad habits. Upon placing him in the Montessori school he has blossomed greatly.

One example of creativity that he seems to exhibit is changing words to songs. He likes to learn children's songs and then have the words changed. They still match the melody, but they are not the traditional words. My wife and I often have to listen to him very carefully to find out what exactly he is singing, because we recognize the tune, but not the words.

Another example is that he will take things that we have not taught him at home, and we are fairly certain he has picked up at school and will expand them at home. His play at home has become very intricate and nuanced in ways that it previously was not.
