Peg Loom Weaving Set Review and Giveaway!

**********This giveaway is now closed!***********

Recently I received a Peg Loom with Wool Yarn (item #V54) from Montessori Services (also known as For Small Hands) for review. My 7-year-old daughter loves crafts, so we eagerly opened it up and started weaving!

peg_loom1Some of the loom features I really like are:

1) The loom is made of wood and the yarn provided is 100% wool
2) The directions are clear and easy to understand
3) The loom is easy to use

After weaving the included string on the loom to make the warp, we threaded the needle and started weaving. My daughter has done projects like this before (making potholders on plastic looms) so she had a good idea of how to do it.

It does take time to weave the yarn all the way across the loom. In about an hour, my daughter had woven yarn halfway across the loom. We did use double yarn in the needle as recommended for faster weaving.

peg_loom2Here are my daughter’s thoughts about the loom (as she weaves on it, see picture):

“I think that you should be careful when going over and under with the yarn because it’s easy to do it wrong. I think that kids ages 5-10 would probably really like it. It comes with lots of yarn in nice colors, and you can make many things with it.”

The instructions include suggestions for several projects, including wallhangings, purses, carpets, and pillows.

I think this craft is a great way to bring practical life activities into any home or classroom. As it says on the box:

“Boys and girls love to weave! Designed to help develop fine motor control, dexterity, concentration, and basic mathematical skills.”

Thank you to Montessori Services for letting us try this great item!

Ooo, my 3-6 children would LOVE a loom!! My favorite practical life activity? Fruit slicing and serving. The children learn so many lessons about grace and courtesy in addition to the classic Montessori aims (concentration, coordination, and independence)

Lovely giveaway. I would also say practical life lessons that involve food are my favorites as well.

Looms are fantastic. Our favorite PL activity right now is bead looming. Probably too advanced for most 3-6 kids, but perfect for our 6-9s. Excellent hand-eye coordination and length of focus work.

  • kari said at December 5th, 2011 at 9:34 pm :

Gorgeous loom! My favorite practical life lesson is any that involve cleaning (sweeping crumbs, wiping tables, drying and washing dishes, etc.) I love the look of pride on my daughters’ faces when they’re able to contribute through their own efforts. :)

  • Jerry Richmond said at December 5th, 2011 at 11:06 pm :

As an intern supervisor, I am constantly reminded that most Practical Life areas lack cultural purpose and basic skills. Weaving in so many different cultures, for example, make weaving meaningful curriculum, as it should be.

  • Nancy said at December 5th, 2011 at 11:09 pm :

I love looms. In fact, I would be anxious for some instructions for the large standing loom that I bought at the AMS Conference in Chicago that came with no instructions. I think the same one was offered in a giveaway a while back on this site. In Practical Life, I like tool activities. The children love having a tree stump in the room into which they can hammer nails.

I love the idea of bringing weaving into the classroom. This loom looks to be a perfect size for my students.

  • Robin said at December 6th, 2011 at 5:10 am :

The loom material would offer the child a very sensorial experience. The colors and texture of the yarn and the activity would offer lots the child an incredible opportunity for focus and concentration. I would put out several pre-loom weaving projects to practice the concept. I have used a wire-coated dish holder purchased from the Container Store and a variety of 1″ colored ribbon and the children wove over and under and under and over. This worked quite well. Then we went to a laminated paper version. I would love the loom that Montessori Services offer to continue the process in Practical Life. It would be an added dimension and a precious gift for the child to take home.

  • Indumathi Ephraim said at December 6th, 2011 at 5:11 am :

My daughter would love a loom! Favorite practical life activity? Folding towels.

  • Eileen Minarik said at December 6th, 2011 at 6:37 am :

I used to be a weaver. Weaving is so meditative. Play some Bach to accompany the rhythm of the weaving.
In 3-6 my favorite PL activity is transferring straight pins from a pincushion to the holes in a salt shaker and back again. It promotes refined small motor contro, OCCI and is also meditative. You can have the work in the classroom all year by just changing the salt shaker, the pin cushion and the type of straight pins (different heads.)
In my 6-9 class my students cook lunch every Wednesday for the whole class ( and lately all of the Primary and Pre-Primary faculty, too .) The children are divided into four teams so each child cooks once a month. Recently the cooking team peeled 10 lbs. of potatoes and 10 lbs. of carrots. They grated 6 lbs of cheddar cheese and chopped 6 large onions. We had a wonderful potato casserole with steamed carrots. The week before fruit skewers and …You get the point.

This looks awesome! My DD would love this. We also love cooking as a PL activity! :)

  • sally said at December 6th, 2011 at 7:45 am :

Ah, looms. They are so relaxing and fulfill many learning experiences; fine motor, eye-hand coordination, sensory experiences with varying yarns and fabrics and of course the math! The patterning, measuring, counting, balancing, predicting and on. My classroom currently loves any art that involves a mathematical element.

Practical life favorite? So many… right now, the hand coffee grinder is the most popular item. It’s made from a lovely wooden box with a hand crank and a small drawer. I put it out with two bowls (one with coffee beans, one empty), a spoon, a note depicting clockwise and a small whisk broom and dust pan. Learning to hold the grinder as you crank and discovering clockwise in a physical manner, spooning the beans, dumping the ground coffee from the small drawer, sweeping up the bits that have fallen to the floor and of course feeling the crunch as you grind and smelling the delicious aroma!

I’d love this weaving loom for my son!!! I would have to say my favorite Practical Life activities are those lessons that involve food. I love how once children have prepared their foods such as banana slicing, how eager they become to share with their friends. My son’s favorite lesson is squeezing oranges to make orange juice, he can be there for hours before letting it go!

  • emily said at December 6th, 2011 at 8:40 am :

I was just looking for one of these to order! We have so many PL favorites. My children love coffee grinding and nut cracking the best. I think I love vegetable slicing!

  • Amy F. said at December 6th, 2011 at 8:40 am :

I would have LOVED a lap loom as a kid! I wore my potholder-making loom out, I made so many. :) And now, this would be fun to share with both my own daughter and the classroom of 3-6 kids. :) My favorite PL activity is either corn tweezing with Indian Corn or spooning dried peas with the tiniest wooden spoon that holds only one pea at a time or…well, it’s SO hard to choose! Practical Life is my favorite part of the classroom, I think, and SO important to them developing a sense of independence. YAY for Montessori education!!! And, thanks for offering this giveaway! :)

  • mme. kaur said at December 6th, 2011 at 12:46 pm :

Great cooperative activity for practical life in the classroom.
Favourite PL activity: the floor, table cleaning activities, because they take the stigma away from ‘making a spill’, or the fear of the consequence. Instead the children are empowered to clean up after themselves or to help friends and feel confident and with self esteem intact!! That’s magical. :)

  • Maryjane said at December 6th, 2011 at 2:24 pm :

I am from the Philippines. Working on a loom is an activity i experienced only when i was in the grades. It is in fact, an activity that is quite forgotten. Blame it to the kind of weather we have in the country. However, as one who really had retained enthusiasm of the activity 50 years ago, I would like to introduce the activity to my pupils again. Until now, i still the passion to it. Hope to train crafters soon. Thank you and God bless.

  • Sara said at December 6th, 2011 at 3:23 pm :

  • Constance Gruen said at December 6th, 2011 at 3:53 pm :

I teach Lower Elementary in a public school and look for meaningful practical life activities. Simple weaving on a teacher-made, cardboard loom last spring was a meaningful follow-up to a book we read on weaving in Central American countries. This year I want to have a wooden loom and do more complex activities. It’s best when projects arise from learning!

  • Michelle said at December 6th, 2011 at 4:32 pm :

My son who attended Montessori public school Pre-k until he was ready for high school noted that they did not have a loom in the lower school, and that it would be an activity that the children would enjoy. We are still in contact with many of the teachers and could donate it to the school for future students to enjoy!

  • Mary said at December 6th, 2011 at 4:49 pm :

We are studying early America for our history. The loom would be great in our elementary classroom. The children need lots of different activities for practical life work. Activities were the children can make and take something away from it are the best. We are also finding that apple cutting is a favorite in our room, because they children like to share and eat the apples.

My favorite practical life activity is cleaning windows/mirrors because after I gave this lesson when I taught children 3-6, they could not get enough of it!

  • Leslie Harman said at December 6th, 2011 at 10:27 pm :

I like weaving as work in all classroom levels because it is great way to integrate the fundamental needs of man. When they make their own cloth, they value the availability of cloth in today’s world. It also promotes pattern recognition.

Sewing is my favorite practical life work because we can always use sewing to create objects as gifts–two-for-one!

  • Jane Marshall said at December 7th, 2011 at 12:24 am :

We love this loom! We have a Practical life job called “Brushing Betsy”. We are able to have a nice Aussie/Border Collie mix dog in our classroom. She loves that job best. She is brushed and pampered and sent off to nap in the corner under the table. We are saving some of her clean hair from the brush to spin into our yarn. Want to use it in a woven item some day. Thanks for posting!

My favorite practical life is everything with pouring and the clean up and using tweezers in every size/form/color….The children love to come up with stories why they should not touch the items with their hands but use the tweezers instead!

My favorite practical life activities are the tool works. The nuts and bolts, wrench, or screwdriver works. They teach such vital skills that will truly last throughout the childs life.

It would be so nice to have a toy for my girls that is in no way affiliated with the Disney Princesses.

I like pouring in the practical life activity. Kids use all sense for hand-and-eye coordination, measuring a portion by feeling solid and liquid … kids love pouring water in cups in the bathtub. I believe this will eventually help them understand the fundamental knowledge of math for a long term. It never occurs to make me understand why kids like it, unless my oldest daughter goes to Montessori School. The weaving fascinated my daughter. Her teachers introduced a weaving using long leaves. Since then, she weaves leaves as soon as she finds it outdoor. The loom must excite her. Colorful strings themselves are pleasing her enough, and then she can use her little fingers back and forth. This would be a perfect gift for little children.

My 4.5 yo son loves spraying and cleaning the mirror, so I usually get him to do the windows and oven door as well :)

This would be a great donation to my son’s lower elementary classroom. They are in short supply of practical life activities.

My favorite practical life activity was washing the baby in the present-school classes. Everyone enjoyed bathing the babies!

This is an age old perfect idea for my kids that are getting older. I just run a small (mostly family) day care and try to combine family atmosphere with developmental learning. Our favorite “family” everyday (seasonally) activity is we all pitch in growing a small garden and then enjoy all the different ways we can enjoy the food we produce. All the kids pitch in one way or another. From the time they can walk they help dig, plant, water, taste and carry the produce up from the garden. Getting to use the watering can is the favorite of all ages.

Sewing & weaving are essentials for practical life. These activities lead to so many wonderful extensions that everyone uses in everyday life. What a beautiful gift!

What a great little loom!!! My favorite practical life activity is grating soap. After the soap powder accumulates, we put a spoonful in a bowl and use a “cha sen”( green tea whisk), and make bubbles, just like we’re making green tea!!!

I like the Dressing Frames. They come in handy when trying to get 30 children ready to go outside to play during the Pennsylvania winter!

My daughter saw this weaving set and would love it!!! I really like the moving alphabet activities where you have a box which has objects inside. Each child picks and object and tries to spell it out with the moveable alphabet. For a child this is exciting and a great thought process behind having a box especially from a child’s point of view questions arise, what could be inside this box, a game full of anticipation and interest.
