True, I think I once heard a Montessori trainer say that "No group ever creates anything" by which he meant that while a group can refine or elaborate on an idea, the ideas come from individuals. And in order to have ideas, you must have time to focus. So important!

Thanks for stopping by!

We discuss this a lot at our public montessori school, and I often think about how as an adult when you have work to get done eveyone has a different style, I myself want to be quiet and focused. In our society we all have to be able to work with socializing going on around us, especially in the "cubicle world" children of a montessori classroom are practicing this, they are learning to work with friends and peers around them with being respectful to each other's concentration and or if they are working together it is actual work, they are building themselves and their interest. Maria Montessori says children, people become normalized through work, she does not say people become normalized by playing tag. The children outdoor time, time in the garden, or when they are able to handle the freedom with responsibility they work together on a "work". I also really like what you mentioned earlier about the respect for the community. etc. Thank you for sharing.

It's such a sticky issue, isn't it? It's always the first thing anyone asks about when you tell them you're involved with Montessori or homeschooling - or both.

I hope people start to realize that there's more to socialization than playing with kids playing with kids their own age.

"There is definitely socialization in a Montessori classroom, but it takes forms that are different from what people are used to seeing."

This is so true of the whole homeschooling atmosphere as well. Your take on socialization in a Montessori classroom can also be used when the inevitable "What about socialization" questions come up about homeschooling. Thanks for giving me some new things to think about.
