Lori, have you tried http://www.poissonrouge.com? So far I haven't come across any ads on this site, and there are lots of fun activities. By the way, I love your blog and the Friday Files!

Wow, great recommendation, Tracy! I'm going to add it to my post.

The more I think about it, the more I prefer CD-ROM games over online ones (Reader Rabbit and JumpStart both make great ones).

Even the free sites have lots of flashing pictures, and the games themselves just promoting branding of the characters. Still, sometimes you're at a computer where you don't have any CD-ROMs and you need kid-appropriate games, so that's when I use these the most.

Luckily for me, my son went to pbskids.org first, and spent 30 minutes a day there for weeks before wanting to seek out other games.

But, when we tried to find other free games we were stumped for a while.

Shame on Nickjr.com and Disney.com for not recognizing the value of having kids spend hours there playing free educational games.

The minimal fee they charge is less than they would make if they opened up the site to all kids. The "page views" and "visit duration" would skyrocket.

Anyway, pbskids.org should be commended for providing soo much useful educational content for FREE.

Here's one of our favourites from the American Museum of Natural History. No log-in required to play. Children can set up an account if they wish to collect on-line "cards" but it's anonymous if they do, no real names or addresses. Our girls love it, and it's highly educational.
http://ology.amnh.org/index.html

I too love the Starfall website. I'm not sure if this is still true but in the past, teachers in CO used to be eligable for free workbooks/journals for their class through this company. It's worth checking out!
