The lack of that socialization is definitely the biggest concern when homeschooling with Montessori. I wrote a post on it awhile ago; you might be interested in reading it:

Socialization: Montessori vs. Homeschool.

In my experience, schools don't always have the optimal amount of children either, especially in elementary. But I do disagree when you say, "...such that the younger ones learn from the older ones and the older ones can practise what they have already learned by demonstrating to the younger ones. This element is lost in homeschooling."

As I've also posted, my son teaches my daughter all the time (and sometimes, he learns from her too) and I believe this is common in homeschooling, whether Montessori or not.

I have no issue with homeschooling per se but I do question its compatibility with the Montessori method. A fundamental component of the Montessori method is the existence of many children of differing ages with a prepared environment, such that the younger ones learn from the older ones and the older ones can practise what they have already learned by demonstrating to the younger ones. This element is lost in homeschooling. Even if there are many siblings being homeschooled together, this would hardly be enough to create the dynamic that Dr. Montessori desired. Consider that Dr. Montessori recommended 30+ children of varying ages in one classroom for optimal interaction and learning...
