Great ideas, Lori! I featured this post and your post on "Getting Ready for Earth Day, Montessori-Style" at http://livingmontessorinow.com/2011/04/04/activity-of-the-week-montessori-inspired-earth-day-activities/. I've been having a lot of fun finding online resources for Earth Day activities. I've added links to lots of ideas in the Living Montessori Now Community.

Hi, Ruby! I know, my kids love to recycle. It's reached the point where they remind me of recyclables if I forget. I'm glad they're being raised that way; it will be second nature to them. It's neat that we can shape the next generation like that.

Thanks for your comment!

My 4 year was delighted a few weeks ago when I asked him to sort the recycling into plastics, paper, and cardboard. Who knew it could be that much fun!

Hi, Jen! I too have heard about the mercury in CFLs - if I recall correctly, it was batted about on Twitter one day. Anyway, the articles I read (including the one you linked to) say that it's a tiny enough amount to not be harmful when they're used correctly and disposed of properly.

They are still a great choice for anyone looking for a way to save energy.

Thanks for stopping by!

Lori - I, too, was sold on Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs. They cost a bit more upfront, and take a bit to turn on in the cold, but if they use less electricity, then I am willing to work with them. However, I've recently learned that they contain mercury. I assumed they were quite similar to regular light bulbs, so never read the packaging until recently.

CFLs must be recycled, or mercury will be in our landfills. Also, if a CFL breaks, it is important to be careful when cleaning it up, due to the mercury content. Popular Mechanics has a section about CFLs that has some helpful info.
